Size
M (L); 20 (22)" head circumference; 9 (1o)" long from folded brim to top of hat
Yarn
3 balls of Lang Yarns Yak (5o% Yak, 5o% merino wool; 142 yds [130 m] per 50 gm ball), 0r 75 yds each of three different colors of any heavy worsted weight yarn. Sample knit in a #0004, b #0099, and c #0005.
Needles
One 16" circular needle and one set of DPN's in US 7 (4.5 mm),or size necessary to obtain gauge.
Gauge
20 sts and 28 rows per 4" in stockinette stitch worked in the round. Take time to check gauge carefully.

Pattern St
Color Transition: Round 1: ki with present color (pc), join new color (nc) and k1; \*[ki pc, k1 nc], repeat from \* to end of round. Round 2: k one round in pc Round 3: \*[ki nc, ki pc], repeat from \* to end of round Round 4: k one round in pc Round 5: \*[k1 pc, k1 nc], repeat from \* to end of round Round 6: cut pc; knit one round in nc
Brim
Using long tail cast-on and color A, CO 8o (9o) sts, place marker, and join in the round taking care not to twist. Work (kl, p1) ribbing until brim measures approximately 5 (6)" long. On next row change to stockinette st and increase as follows: \*k 8 (9) sts, M1L. Repeat from \* 9 more times; 90 (100) sts.
Body
K two rounds in stockinette st. Begin working the Color Transition as described in Pattern St section with color A as the present color and color B as the new color. K in color B for 2.5". Work Color Transition again with color B as the present color and color C as the new color. Continue with color C until the hat measures 8.5 (9.5)" from folded brim. Begin decreasing as follows (changing to the DPN's when it is no longer possible to work on the circular needle):
Decreases
Round 1: \*K1, k2tog, repeat from \* 29 (32) more times; k 0 (1). Round 2: k to end of round Round 3-4: k2tog to end of round; k any remaining sts in stockinette. Break yarn and use darning needle to thread through remaining sts; gently pull to close off the hat and pull strand to inside of hat.
Finishing
Weave in ends, give to a cold missionary to wear in health!
