Twisted Socks Knitting Pattern with Wrapped Stitches and Tubular Cast-Off

KNITTY TWIST SOCKS

CEYLAN GUL

Pattern illustration

These were knit for the Sock Knitters Anonymous June 2008 DYO Sockdown! Challenge and were so much fun to design. The traveling stitches are knit without a cable needle (although you could still use one if you wanted), and the length of the foot is altered by the number of repeats of the lattice stitch pattern. The pattern is written for the magic loop method, but double pointed needles can be used. Although the pattern is written toe-up, it can easily be modified for top-down construction.

Materials:

· Yarn: Dream in Color Smooshy Sock (Fingering 4 ply Merino, 450 yards), or other similar weight sock yarn · Size 1 US circular needles (or 4 double pointed needles), or size needed to obtain gauge · Tapestry needle for weaving in ends · Cable needle (optional)

Gauge:

32 sts/46 rows $=4$ inch (Note: Row gauge is extremely important is ensuring you get the right fit for this pattern. Please, check your gauge!!!) Fits women's US size 9 foot, $8\,\%$ foot circumference.

Pattern Notes:

This pattern is written for US size 9 feet, but can be altered to fit smaller or larger sizes by changing the number of repeats of the lattice pattern in Chart A. Each repeat measures approximately $3/4$ of an inch with the correct row gauge. If you want to alter the length in smalle increments, increase the number of even rounds before starting Chart A. You can also increase or decrease the number of rows knit on the toe to get a better fit. I like a pretty square te but if you want a pointier toe, cast-on fewer stitches. FluffKnitterDeb has a fantastic tutorial on the Turkish Cast-On method, and you can find it on her blog here: http://fluffyknitterdeb.blogspot.com/2005/10/kniting-made-easier-turkish-cast-on.html Cabling without a Cable Needle: I have included notes on how to perform the twists without a cable needle, but for a detailed explanation with pictures please see Grumperina's blog here: http://www.grumperina.com/cables.html 1x1 Twisted Rib: (Knit 1 through the back loop, purl 1) to end.

Toe:

Using the Turkish Cast-On method, cast-on 16 stitches (if you use another cast-on method, just make sure you have a total of 32 stitches). Row 1: Knit. Row 2: (K1, M1, knit to last 2 stitches at end of needle, M1, K1) twice. Row 3: Repeat row 2. Row 4: Knit. Row 5: (K1, M1, knit to last 2 stitches at end of needle, M1, K1) twice. Repeat rows 4 and 5 until you have a total of 68 stitches. The front needle wil be your instep stitches, and theback needle will be your sole stitches.

Foot:

Knit 2 rounds even. Rearrange your stitches like so: Move both the first and last stitch on the back needle to the front needle (if using 4 DPN's, arrange all the instep stitches on one needle and then split the sole stitches on the other two). You should now have 36 stitches on the front needle (the instep stitches) and 32 on the back needle (the sole stitches). Knit Chart A 3 times on the instep stitches, and knit all sole stitches Knit Chart B once on the instep stitches, and knit all sole stitches. Once you've knit the last row of Chart $B$ on the instep stitches, you will start the heel on the back needle.

Heel:

The heel is a short row heel worked over 32 stitches. Row 1: Knit to the last stitch, wrap and turn (w&t). Row 2: Purl to the last stitch, w&t. Row 3: Knit to stitch before last wrapped stitch, w&t. Row 4: Purl to stitch before last wrapped stitch, w&t. Repeat rows 3 and 4untilyou've wrapped 9 stitches on each side, leaving 14 unwraped stithes in between. You'll now pick up the wrapped stitches. Row 1: Knit to the first wrapped stitch, slip the wrapped stitch to the right needle, pick up the wrap with the left needle, slip the wrapped stith back to the lft needle, and ktog the stith and its wrap. Wrap next stith and tun (this stitch will have 2 wraps). Row 2: Purl to the first wrapped stitch, slip the wrapped stitch to the right needle, pick up the wrap with the left needle, slip the wrapped stitch back to the left needle, and p2tog the stitch and its wrap. Wrap next stitch and turn (this stitch will have 2 wraps). Row 3: Knit to the next wrapped stitch, slip both wrapped stitch to the right needle, pick up the wraps with the lft needle, slip the wrapped stitch back to the left needle, and k3tog the stitch and its wraps. Wrap next stitch and tun (this stitch will also have 2 wraps). Row 4: Purl to the next wrapped stitch, slip the wrapped stitch to the right needle, pick up the wraps with the left needle, slip the wrapped stitches back to the left needle, and p3tog the stitch and its wraps. Wrap next stitch and turn (this stitch will also have 2 wraps). Repeat rows 3 and 4 untilall the wraps have been picked up When you pick up the last wrapped stitch on the knit side, wrap the first stitch on the front needle and turn. This will ensure there are no holes along the heel. After picking up the last wrap on the purl side, wrap the last stitch on the front needle, turn. Knit to end of back needle. When you continue onto the leg, make sure you pick those wrapped stitches and k2tog. Leg:

Knit Chart C.

Note: Once you reach the point where the twisted stitches travel from the back needle to the front needle, you'll need to rearrange your stitches to allow you to twist the stitches on the same needle. When you reach the end of the front needle on rows 22, 30, 38, 46,54 and 62 move 2 stitches from the back to the front needle and knit the twist. When you reach the end of the back needle on these same rows, move 2 stitches from the back to the front needle and knit the twist over 3 stitches instead of 2. Make sure to move those stitches back to the correct needle after you've completed a row or two.

Cuff:

Knit 1x1 Twisted Rib for one inch. Bind off al stitches (I used the Tubular Cast-Off). Enjoy your beautiful new socks!!

LEGEND:

Knit Right Twist: Move yarn to the front, slip first stitch to right hand needle purlwise, move yarn to the back, knit next stitch, then looking at the back of your work, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch from the back, pull your right needle out of both stitches and then pick the knitted stitch back up (your stitches will be twisted now), knit the stitch off the left needle. Left Twist: With yarn to the back, sipfirst sitch to right hand needle purlwise, knit next stitch, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch from the front, pull your right needle out of both stitches and then pick the knitted stitch back up (your stitches will be twisted now), knit the stitch off the left needle. \* The rows with the asterisks indicate that the row where you will be performing twists that float across both needles. For the twist at the end of the front needle, move 2 stitches form the back to the front and knit the twist. When you reach the end of the back needles, move 2 stitches from the back to the front needle and knit a left twist with 3 stitches, not 2 (this is so the twists line up evenly): when performing the last twist on this row, instead of knitting 1 stitch after slipping the stitch to the right needle, knit 2 stitches, then insert the left needle into the slipped stitch from the front, pull your right needle out of both stitches and then pick the knitted stitch back up (your stitches will be twisted now), knit the stitch off the left needle.
