Happy Anniversary Beanie by Gralina Frie

A quick knit combining two basic rib stitch patterns. This is the perfect TV knit for your male friends this fall. It'll take no more than two - three at the most - TV knit sessions to finish. Just four short tails to weave in and you're done! Use up that last skein of your last FO -one skein is enough!
Materials:
Yarn A: 80-100m of Aran/heavy worsted weight yarn or the double amount of DK weight yarn doubled. Yarn B: For the stripes you'll need far less, perhaps 30m, of a contrasting colored yarn Grey/black: less than 1 skein (190m/210yrd) of Donegal from Lang Yarns: 483 (gray) and a rest of some plain black DK wool for the stripes. Both yarns held doubled throughout the entire knitting. Dark brown/white: 1 skein (80m/90yrd) of Ecologico Camel from Schachenmayr/Nomotta: 00199 (dk brown) and a small amount of Eco-ullfrom Marks&Kattens: 1982 (off white). Needles: US 4 - 3.5mm for the brim and Us 7 - 4.5mm circular or DPN needles for the hat, or size needed to obtain gauge. Tapestry needle. 4 stitch markers. Gauge: 17 sts to 10 cm/ 4" with 4.5mm needles over Stockinette sts. Please make sure to get a firm material at this gauge. I find that pure wool fibers tend to grow when used in a hat. I rewrote this pattern due to this fact. The brim may seem way too narrow, but it will grow - I promise! Size: to fit head size 55-60cm.
Abbreviations:
k=knit; p=purl; st(s)=stitch(es); stockinette sts=knit 1 row, purl 1 row (only needed for gauge swatch); skpo=slip 1 st knitwise, knit 1, slip slipped st over; k2tog=knit 2 together; PM=placemarker
PATTERN
With yarn A and Us 4 - 3.5mm needles, cast on 84 stitches. Join in a round, being careful not to twist your stitches. Work 10 rounds of 1x1 rib (k1,p1), beginning with k1,p1, = about 3.5cm/1.5". Change to Us 7 - 4.5mm needles. Work 6 rounds of 2x2 rib (k2,p2), beginning with k2,p2.
Stripes:
Work3roundswithyarnB. Work 4roundswithyarn A Repeat from \* 2 more times. Carry the non-working yarn along the inside of the hat; break yarn B when you've finished the last of the 3 stripes, leaving a tail for weaving. The hat measures about 15cm/6" from cast on edge. Next round is a set up round before decreasing for the crown. \*Work 21 sts, PM\* repeat from \* until end of round.
Work 1 round in yarn B. To work the first stitch of the next round (a knit stitch)-first pick up the stitch loop from thepreviousround andslipit onto the left hand needle. Knit through both stitch loops (one in yarn A and one in yarn B). Repeat every time you're changing color.
Round 1: \*skpo, work in 2x2 rib until 2 sts before marker/end of DPN, k2tog\* repeat 3 more times = 8 sts decreased = 76 remaining sts. Round 2: Work even (work the stitches as they appear - i.e. knit k sts and purl p sts.) Repeat from round 1 until you have 7 sts left between each marker = 28 sts. Now omit the even rounds and work only decrease rounds (round 1) until you have 3 sts left between markers/on eachDPN. Next round: \*skpo, k1\* repeat from \* to end = 8 sts Next round: \*skpo\* repeat from \* to end = 4 sts Cut yarn and pull taut twice, using a tapestry needle, through the live remaining stitches. Weave in the ends.
