November Socks
Birgitte Zeuner, 2008. Not for resale.

The simple, yet elegant honeycomb ribbing stitch pattern makes for a very useful sock for everyday wear. The simplicity of the stitch pattern works great with those wonderful, multicoloured sock yarns. The colour and the denseness of the pattern remind me of November. Knowing what November is like where I live, some might notice the pun in the title ... Yarn: 70-100 g of any sock weight yarn (depending on size of foot and desired cuflength). Shown here in Schoppel Admiral dégradé, colourway 1353deg (420m/100g); 75% wool/25% polyamide. Needles: Double pointed needles (dpns) size 2.25mm. Gauge: 33 sts and 48 rows = 10 cm (4'") in St st. The directions are given for a woman's sock. Foot length is adjustable. Leg circumference (stretched): 21-29 cm (8 14-11 12 in). Foot circumference (stretched): 22-24 cm (8 12-9 12 in). Larger/smaller sizes can be obtained by casting on 8 sts more/less, and adjusting the pattern to having 2 sts more /less on each needle.

Heel flap:
The heel flap is worked across 2 needles (32 sts); the stitches on the other two needles are resting. The heel flap is worked back and forth in St st except that the first 3 sts and the last 3 sts are knit on every row. Knit 30 rows. This gives 15 knots on each edge resulting from knitting the first and last stitches on each row.
Turn heel:
Next row (RS): K17, ssk, k1, turn. Next row (WS): Sl1, p3, p2tog, p1, turn. Next row (RS): Sl1, k to 1 stitch before the gap created by turning, ssk, k1, turn. Next row (Ws): Sl1, p to 1 stitch before the gap created by turning, p2tog, p1, turn. Repeat these last two rows until all stitches on the needle have been worked (no gap left) - 18 sts remaining.
Gusset:
Pick up 17 sts along each side of the heel flap (1 stitch before the knot edge, 1 stitch in each of the 15 knots (15 sts in total), 1 stitch after the knot edge). Make sure the 2 needles not Worked while knitting the heel flap are kept in pattern. Divide the 18 sts resulting from the heel flap equally on the 2 needles holding the stitches picked up along the edge of the heel flap. Starting under the foot, the first needle holding heel flap stitches and picked up stitches will be called Needle 1, the two needles kept in pattern are Needles 2 and 3, while the last needle holding picked up stitches and heel flap stitches is Needle 4. Work the following rounds by repeating these two rounds: Round 1: K all sts on Needle 1; work Needles 2 and 3 in pattern; k all sts on Needle 4. Round 2: K to last 3 sts on Needle 1, k2tog, k1; work Needles 2 and 3 in pattern; k1, ssk, k to the end of Needle 4. Repeat these two rounds until 16 sts remain on each needle.
Foot:
Work Needles 1 and 4 in St st (k all sts) and Needles 2 and 3 in pattern until sock measures 1 3/4" less than desired length. K3 rounds. Toe: Round 1: Decrease Round: [K to last 2 sts of needle, p2tog] 4 times. Round 2: K all sts. Repeat these two rounds another three times. Then start working Decrease Round every round until 2 sts remain on each needle (8 sts in total). Break yarn and pull through the remaining 8 sts.
Finishing:
Weave in ends.
Happy knitting!
