an original design in honor of my friend D. Diffily By Laurie O. Campbell Written in plain English for beginners.


Pattern shown: Made with a J or a K hook. Round 1- chain 4 slip stitch together the chain 4 to form a circle. Round 2 - double crochet into the formed circle from the previous round. (chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet) and then 15 more double crochet) [[16 dc total]] slip stitch together to form a circle Round 3- chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet) then chain two \*double crochet 1 and chain 2\*\* completely around the circle. Slip stitch at the end to the first double crochet to complete the round. [16 double crochet and 16 sets of chain 2]] Round 4 - slip stitch to the next chain two space from previous round then chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet) then double crochet 2, then chain 2, then double crochet 3 (first corner formed. +Chain 3 skip one chain two space and single crochet in the second chain two space. Chain 3, skip one chain 2 space from previous round and then 3 double crochet chain 2 and 3 double crochet. ++ Repeat from + to ++ to form the last two corners, chain 3, single crochet into the 2nd chain 2 space, chain 3 and slipstitch to form a square. Round 5 -in the same slipstitched double crocheted, chain 3, (counts as a double crochet), double crochet in the next 2 double crochets from the previous round. ln the corner chain 2 space, double crochet 2 chain 2 double crochet 2. Then double crochet in the next 3 double crochet from the previous round. Chain 3, single crochet into the single crochet from the previous round, chain 3. 3 double crochet^^ Repeat from ^ to ^^ to complete the round. [[4 corners,4midsections.]] Round 6 - in the same slipstitched double crocheted, chain 3, (counts as a double crochet), double crochet in the next 4 double crochets from the previous round. #chain 2 then double crochet in the corner chain 2 space. Chain 2, then 5 double crochet in the next 5 double crochet from the previous round. Chain 3, then begin double crochet into the top of the previous round gathered stitch, chain 3 . 1 double crochet into the 8 from the previous round ●● Repeat from ● to ●· 2 times on the third time omit the last 8 double crochets and slip stitch to the first double crochet to complete the round [4 corners,4midsections.]] Round 10 - chain 3 in the slipstitched double crochet from the previous round (counts as a double crochet), double crochet all the way around the square in the two corner spaces of each corner - 2 double crochet in the first space, chain 2, then 2 double crochet in the second space. Continue to double crochet - in the chain 3 spaces from the previous round - crochet 2 double crochet. Slip stitch to the first double crochet to complete the round Round 11 - in the same slipstitched double crocheted, chain 3, (counts as a double crochet), double crochet to the corner space. In the corner space 2 double crochet, chain 2, and 2 double crochet to form the corner continue around forming the 4 corners.

To finish:
Option 1: can add a contrasted or coordinating color between either rounds 8 and 9 or rounds 9and10. Option 2: add a row of single crochet - corners (2 single crochet chain 1 and then 2 single crochet in the corner space from the previous row.) Should measure 12" when blocked.
