$\spadesuit$ 100g 8ply DK wool (here I've used Jo Sharp Classic $100\%$ pure wool, but anything you can get gauge with will do) $\spadesuit$ 4 4mm dpns $\spadesuit$ Pair $4\mathrm{mm}$ straight or circular needles (optional) $\spadesuit$ 6 buttons
Gauge
22.5sts and 30 rows over $10c\mathrm{m}$ (4 inches)using $4\mathrm{mm}$ (US 6, UK 8 ) needles.

The gist of it is:
Bring yarn to the front, slip 1 purlwise and bring wool to theback. Cast off 3 sts, but instead of knitting into them, just sp then purlwise. Pass the last worked stitch onto the left needle, turn work. Bring yarntotheback,andusingcablecastoncaston4 sts. (Cable cast on:instead of inserting the needle thru the stitch,placeitbetween thefirst and secondsts,then proceedasusual) Turn work, send yarn to back. Slip 1,pass the last CO stitch over-done!
Pattern
Cast on 48sts on dpns.Distribute across needles,16sts each, join (careful not to twist). Round 1 - 20: $2\times2$ rib (knit 2, purl 2) 21: Cast off 16sts, finish row in patt. The rest of the pattern is knit back and forth, you may find it easier to change to straight,or even better,circular needles (circ's are great because you can try it on as you go). 22-24: Work in patt. 25: CO 24, work row in patt. 26 - 34: Work in patt. 35:Work 4 sts,make buttonhole 36 - 44: Work in patt. 45:Work4 sts,make buttonhole 46 - 54: Work in patt. 55:Work4 sts,make buttonhole 56 - 62: Work in patt. Cast offVERY loosely.Attach buttons.Done!
