1. These socks are worked top down on DPNs. Feel free to knit a different method if .youwish. 2. This pattern assumes you have a basic knowledge of sock construction and methods. Copyright 2012, Becky Greene CUFF: Cast on 64 sts with MC; join to work in round. Rnd 1-15: \*K2, P2\*, rep around. Knit 1 rnd with MC. Switch to Leg chart. Entire sock is knit in stockinette stitch. Chart will be worked four times in each round. If you would like to modify the length of the leg, add or subtract extra plain rows surrounding the motifs. For balance, add/subtract the same number of rows on each side of the motif. (For example, add one extra row of blue before the moons and one row after the moons). After round 60 is knit, it's time for the heel: Switch to MC, working back across last 31 sts, k3, p 25, k3. You will work the heel back and forth on these 31 stitches. Rows 2-22: keeping first 3 and last 3 stitches in garter stitch (knit on both right and wrong side) and the rest of the heel in stockinette (knit on right side, purl on wrong side), work center 25 stitches according to heel chart. You will have to knit this using the intarsia method. Don't fret. It's only a few rows.) If you need a longer heel, add more rows at this point, continuing with MC.
TURN HEEL:
Row 1: K 18, ssk, k1, turn. Row 2: Sl1, p7, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 3: Sl1, k to one stitch before gap, ssk, k1, turn. Row 4: Sl1, p to one stitch before gap, p2tog, p1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all stitches are knit up. Knit across half of heel stitches with MC. Switch to CC7 (semolina/gold).
GUSSET:
Round starts at bottom of foot. Needle 1 will hold bottom and side stitches, needle 2 will hold instep/top of foot stitches, and needle 3 will hold 2nd side and bottom of foot stitches. Knit across remaining heel stitches. Pick up and knit one stitch in the edge of each garter ridge, plus an extra stitch in the corner before the instep stitches. Work across instep. Slip last instep stitch on to needle 3 so there are 32 instep sts back on needle 2. Pick up stitches along second heel edge, and work across first half of heel stitches. Round 1: Knit across needle 1, following chart for foot to last 3 stitches. K2tog, k1. Knit across instep in pattern. On needle 3, k1, ssk, knit to end of round following pattern. Round 2: Knit according to chart. REGARDING EXTRA GUSSET STITCHES AND COLOR CHART: I worked the first 16 stitches on needle 1 according to the chart. Work remaining stitches in alternating colors for rounds that have two colors. For needle 3, you will work the LAST 16 stitches of the needle according to the chart, and knit pinstripes for the decreasing gusset stitches. Alternate rounds 1 and 2 until total stitch count is back to 64 sts; 16 each on needles 1 and 3, 32 sts on needle 2. Continue knitting according to chart on all stitches until round 55 is complete. Again, if you need to adjust the number of rows for your correct foot length, add or subtract from the plain rows around the motifs. If you want to incorporate all of the motifs, please be sure to measure your foot and check your gauge EARLY. TOE: Switch to MC. Rnd 1: Knit across needle 1 to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. On needle 2, k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. On needle 3, k1, ssk, knit to end of round. Rnd 2:Knit. Repeat these two rounds until there are 16 stitches left. Knit across needle 1. Kitchener 8 instep stitches to 8 sole stitches. Weave in a zillion ends, and enjoy! Copyright 2012, Becky Greene
