Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Yarn Suggestions:
Cascade Ecological Wool Red (Scarlet 8450 used in sample) Any worsted weight yarn or chunky weight yarn in any color of your choice Crochet Hook Size: J-10 hook (6.0mm) or I-9 hook (5.5mm) Gauge: Not terribly important, i.e. use a larger hook to make a larger flower, smaller hook to make a smaller flower
Pattern:
Round 1: with I hook and red yarn, start with a double magic loop, ch 2 and work 18 hdc into the center of the loop, tighten loop but leave about a $\frac{1}{4}$ hole in the center, join with with a sl st (18 hdc) Round 2:\*ch 3, skip the next hdc, sl st in next hdc\*, repeat from \* around, sl st to join (9 "ch 3 spaces" made) Round 3: You'll be working a petal into each ch 3 space from round 2. Here is the petal (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) into each ch 3 space, around (9 petals made) Round 4: In this round, make sure you are slip stitching "around" the hdc from Round 1. \*ch 3, skip 2 hdc, sl st around the first stitch in Round 1, \*ch 3, skip 2 hdc, sl st around next hdc\*, repeat from \* around, slip stitch to join (6 "ch 3 spaces" made) Round 5: Repeat Round 3 (you'll be making a total of 6 petals), sl st to join, fastenoff Finish off by threading the tail through a yarn needle and pulling through to the back of the flower. Use the two tails or yarn to sew the flower to the body of the hat (or whatever you are sewing the flower to) and weave in the ends. I like to sew the flower a little left and above the left eye of the sock monkey hat.
