Mal de Mer C
Cotton Lace shawlette

The waves and dips in this fluid lace design can make us slightly, though happily, dizzy. Combine it with the beautiful colors of the ocean, and we get Mal de Mer! Sounds pretty, but it is French for sea sickness. Just a touch of knitter's humor. The piece is % of a full circle, so it stay on your shoulders and won't easily slip off as %-circle shawls do. The pattern repeats are easy to remember, making this enjoyable to knit. We love to watch the colors of gradients change as we work. And we love delicate lace. So much of what knitters love is in this package. Knitted using Bre-Aly Thread's gorgeous un-plied cotton, the resulting project is soft, light-weight and perfect for year-round wear. Add sparkly beads at the outer edge to create the effect of frothy waves lapping at the shore. SIZE: Cover shawlette measures 32" across the neck edge and 17" down center back after blocking. MATERIALS: One Ball of Bre-Aly Threads 3-ply Gradient Cotton: colorway - Mal de Mer (100g ball = 500 yds) One long #5 or #6 circ needle Stitch marker GAUGE: Gauge is not critical here. ABBREVIATIONS: K= knit P = purl YO = yarn over K2TOG = knit 2 sts together SSK = slip 2 sts knitwise, and then knit them from the right-hand needle PSSO = pass slipped st off KBL = knit through the back loop Bm1 = bumpless m1 = a modified KFB increase that hides the increase bump on the back of your work. Shown as an "m" on the chart. See video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syFeOy1B9ok Bm1p = bumpless m1 purlwise. Works the same way as a bm1, but you purl, reorient the st leg and purl again in the same st, rather than knit. Shown as an “m" on the chart.
NOTES: Before you begin
●lf using Bre-Aly cotton threads, watch tensioning so that you use all strands evenly. You will get the hang of this after just a few rows. ●Although these sts are not charted, you will begin and end every row with a 5-st garter edge. This means you knit 5 sts at the beginning and end of every row. ●After knitting your first 5 sts, you will knit the chart below 6 times across (or follow written instructions), passing markers as you go and then end with 5 knit sts. ·Row 59: Make sure your yo st remains on the correct side of your marker. ●YO before a purl st: Be sure to wrap your yarn all the way around the needle for this type of yo. ●YO after a purl st: Simply keep your yarn where it is (in the front of your work) and knit the next st. This creates an automatic yo. INSTRUcTIONs: CO 5 sts. Knit 12 rows. Do not turn after last row, pick up 6sts down side and 5 more along CO edge for a total of 16 sts. WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS: Knit garter edges at beginning and end of each row. Instructions below describe one wedge only. Repeat instructions 6 times, once for each of the 6 wedges. Row 1: After first 5-st garter edge, place marker. \*K1, place marker across to last 5 sts. Place marker. Knit last 5-st garter edge. Garter sts to be added every row, but will not be repeated in the instructions from here on. Row 2: K3 sts in 1 (k1, bm1, knit in front again.) Row 3: P1, bm1p, k-tbl, p1, bm1p. Row 4: K2, p1, k2. CHART: "m" means to increase in that st-- bm1, or bm1p, depending on whether the current st is a knit or a purl st. Where there is no "m," but the wedge row shows an increase, you know to bm1 or bm1p in the first and/or last st, (unless the yo at the end of the wedge is the increase you need.) You can check against the written instructions to make sure increases are done as directed. Odd-numbered rows are the right side (Rs), and even-numbered rows are the wrong side(Ws). Note that every st is worked as it is written in the chart. For example, a dot in the square means to knit a purl stitch regardless if it appears on the RS or the Ws. A blank square always means to knit that stitch. BO LOOSELY, using a stretchy BO or a larger needle (I used a #8 needle to BO sts.) FINISHiNG: Tie and weave in all yarn ends. Soak and block flat.
