This is a version of a ribbed men's hat I fell in love with in a yarn shop. The pattern offered in the shop didn't look at all like the hat - that's why I decided to make my own pattern. I've knitted this twice. The first one is the one in the picture above and it looked so lovely - but the yarn had too much ease and after a couple of months wearing, my husband looked as if he was wearing a mushroom on his head... I've recalculated and knitted a new, tighter version, hoping that this is going to fit better in the long run. Materials: 1-2 skeins of M&K Eco Ull or 1 skein of Hjertegarn Incawool, 4.5mm needles or size needed to obtain gauge, Tapestry needle Gauge: 15 sts to 10 cm/ 4" with 4.5mm DPN needles over stockinette sts. Size: to fit head size 55-60cm. Finished measurements: Circumference cast on 46cm (unstretched) and length 23 cm. Abbreviations: k=knit, p=purl, st(s)=stitch(es), stockinette sts=knit 1 Round, purl 1 Round (only needed for gauge swatch, k2tog=knit 2 together, p2tog=purl 2 together, \*\*=repeat instructions inside the \* across the round Cast on 80 sts and work 1x1 rib, k1, p1, for 6 rounds. Change to a pattern of k3, p1 and keep knitting until hat measures 17 cm (from cast on). Then decrease as follows: Round 1: \* k3, p1, k2tog, k1, p1 \* work 2 rounds Round 4: \* k2tog, k1, p1, k2, p1 \* work 2 rounds Round 7: \* k2, p1, k2tog, p1 \* work 2 rounds Round 10: \* k2tog, p1, k1, p1 \* work 2 rounds Round 13: \* k1, p1, p2tog \* work 2 rounds Round 16: \* k2tog, p1 \* work 1 round Round 18: Cut yarn and pull taut, using a tapestry needle, twice through the live remaining sts. Weave in the ends and turn the hat inside out!
