
Green Feathers and Fans
YaYaLovesToKnit Size: Child size - 3rd to 4th grades. Hat measures 18" and would be loose fitting and suitable for a girl who doesn't like tight fitting hats. Yarn: Worsted weight yarn. Sample was made using Red Heart Soft Yarn in Deep Sea. Required less than 1/2 skein. Needles:16"US 06 and US08 circular needles, and a set of Us O8 dp needles Other tools: Stitch marker and a darning needle Gauge: 16 stitches x 20 stitches = 4" square Abbreviations used: K- knit k2tog - knit two stitches together p - purl yo - yarn over
Begin pattern:
1. Using US 08 circular needle, cast on 72 stitches. Place stitch marker to indicate beginning of round, and join to begin knitting in the round. Take care to not twist the stitches. 2. Knit around until 2” from cast-on edge. (Stockinette) 3. Change to US 06 needle and [K1, P1] around until ribbing formed is 1". 4. Change back to the US 08 circular needle and knit stockinette for 1". 5. Begin feather and fan lace: \*[k2tog] 3 times, [yo, k1] 6 times, [k2tog] 3 times. Repeat from \* for remainder of round} ·Knit 3 rounds 6. Repeat feather and fan sequence two more times 7. Begin decreases to form crown of hat. Change to the dp needles when the stitches become too few to fit comfortably around the circular needle. [K7, K2tog] around - 64 stitches remain Knit around [K6, K2tog] around - 56 stitches Knit around [K5, K2tog] around - 48 stitches Knit around [K4, k2tog] around - 40 stitches ?Knit around [K3, K2tog] around - 32 stitches Knit around [K2, K2tog] around - 24 stitches Knit around [K1, K2tog] around - 16 stitches [K2tog] around - 8 stitches 8. Cut the yarn leaving at least a 12" yarn end. Using the darning needle, thread the yarn through the remaining 8 stitches; cinch firmly and anchor the yarn. 9. Finishing: Weave in this yarn end as well as the one at the beginning of the hat. Steam or block the hat if desired.
