Gauge
16 sts x 24 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch worked in the round. Take time to check gauge. I am a tighter-thanaverage knitter, so you may have to go down a few needle sizes to get the pattern gauge.
Pattern Notes
Use a stretchy CO method for both hat and mitten cuff.I used the Alternate Long-Tail described in Leslie Ann Bestor's "Cast On Bind Off, 54 Step-by-Step Methods" book. You may also find several YouTube Video's; simply Google “Alternate Long-Tail Cast On". The mitten cuff is knit with a 2 stitch twist and cable design. The cable is used on the front only and extends from the cuff to the fingers of the hand. The mitten is finished in stockinette for the palm and over the upper half of the fingers.

Left and Right Hand Finishing
Rnds 52 - 66: Knit to end of rnd. This is where you will want to try on the mitten and determine if this is the proper length for you. The next 6 rounds will give you a length, at the proper gauge, of 1.5 in /3 cm.
Shaping Mitten Top
Remove st marker, k2. Place marker below the row that ends the rnd.
Size S/M
Divide sts on 3 dpn, distributed as follows: N1 & N2: 11; N3: 10-32sts. Rnd 1: (K9, k2tog) twice, k8, k2tog-29 sts. Rnd 2: (K8, k2tog) twice, k7, k2tog-26 sts. Rnd 3: (K7, k2tog) twice. K6, k2tog—23 sts. Rnd 4: (K6, k2tog) twice, k5, k2tog—20 sts Rnd 5: (K5, k2tog) twice, k4, k2tog-17 sts. Rnd 6: (K4, k2tog) twice, k3, k2tog-14 sts. Rnd 7: (K3, k2tog) twice, k2, k2tog—11sts. Skip to Finishing Mitten Top
Size L/XL
Divide sts on 4 dpn, distributed as follows: N1 & N2: 10; N3 & N4:9-38sts. Rnd 1: (K8, k2tog) twice, (k7, k2tog) twice-34 sts. Rnd 2: (K7, k2tog) twice. (k6, k2tog) twice-30 sts. Rnd 3: (K6, k2tog) twice, (k5, k2tog) twice-26 sts. Rnd 4: (K5, k2tog) twice. (k4, k2tog) twice-22 sts. Rnd 5: (K4, k2tog) twice. (k3, k2tog) twice-18 sts. Rnd 6: (K3, k2tog) twice, (k2, k2tog) twice-14 sts. Rnd 7: (K2, k2tog) twice, (k1, k2tog) twice-10 sts.
Finishing Mitten Top
Cut yarn, leaving a 12-in / 30.5-cm tail. Thread yarn onto a tapestry needle and run through the remaining sts, cinching up the hole. Pull the yarn through to the inside and weave in the end.
Finishing Thumb
Place the 11sts from the waste yarn or stitch holder onto two dpn. With a third dpn, pick up 5 sts from the gap between the two needles. With new yarn and fourth dpn, knit one rnd, including the 5 sts you picked up. Place a marker under this needle to show the end of rnd. Distribute sts as follows: N1 & N2: 5 sts; N3: 6 sts-16 sts. Rnds 2-9: Knit to end of rnd. Try on mitten here to make sure length of thumb is good, remembering to add length of finishing rnds to your calculation. In given gauge, 3 rows would equal .5 in/1.5 cm. Rnd 10: (K3, k2tog) twice, k4, k2tog-13 sts. Rnd 11: (K2, k2tog) twice, k3, k2tog-10 sts. Rnd 12: (K1, k2tog) twice, k2, k2tog—7 sts. Cut yarn, leaving a 6-in /15-cm tail. Thread yarn onto a tapestry needle and run through the remaining sts, cinching up the hole. Pull the yarn through to the inside and weave in the end.
Finishing
Use your tapestry needle to weave loose ends into the inside of your mitt at the opening for the hand, the thumb and at the cuff edge.
