Soft cables and moss stitch adorn the back of these warm and snuggly mittens. Beginning with a twisted rib and ending with decreases worked right into the pattern these mittens will work up so quickly you will want to make several pairs. Instructions include a fingerless mitt version as well.

Right Mitten
\*Note The pattern is written for double pointed needles. If using magic loop or 2 circular needles, place a marker to indicate the division between needle 1 and 2 and keep needle 3 sts on oneneedle. Cast on 44 stitches. Divide onto 3 needles as follows: Needle 1 -10 sts Needle 2 -10 sts Needle 3 - 24 sts Join in rnd, being careful not to twist sts.
Ribbing:
Rnd 1-15: (All needles) - \*K1tbl, p1; rep from \* to end of rnd. Rnd 16: (Increase rnd) Needles 1 & 2 - K1tbl, pfb, k1tbl, p1, k1tbl, pfb, k1tbl, pfb, k1tbl, p1.13 sts each needle Needle 3 - K1tbl, pfb, work in ribbing as established to last 3 sts, pfb, k1tbl, p1. 26 sts Start Pattern Rnd 1 Needles 1 and 2: Knit Needle 3: K3, pm, follow Chart A or written instructions (20 sts), pm, k3. Start Gusset Shaping
Rnd 9: Needle 1: K4, pm, kfb in next 2 stitches, pm, k7. 15 sts Needle 2: Knit Needle 3: Continue in pattern as established. Rnd 10: Needle 1: K4, sm, knit sts between marker, sm, k7. Needle 2: Knit Needle 3: Continue in pattern as established. Rnd 11: Needle 1: K4, sm, kfb, knit to 1 st before marker, kfb, sm, k7.2 sts increased. For Mittens
Rnds 1-4 Needle 1: Knit. Needle 2: Knit. Needle 3: K3, sm, follow Chart B or written instructions, sm, k3. Rnd 5 Needle 1: K1, ssk, knit to end. Needle 2: Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Needle 3: K3, sm, continue Chart B or written instructions, sm, k3. 48 sts Rnd 6 Needle 1: Knit. Needle 2: Knit. Needle 3: K3, sm, continue Chart B or written instructions, sm, k3. Repeat rnds 5-6 two times more (40 sts). Then, continuing with Chart B on needle 3, work rnd 5 six times (16 sts). Next Rnd: \*K2tog: rep from \* to end of rnd. 8 sts Break yarn and thread onto yarn needle, Run yarn through remaining loops and pull tight. Thread to inside of mitten and weaveinend.
Thumb:
Rnd 1: Place 9 sts from waste yarn onto each of two needles, attach yarn and knit these stitches, with spare needle pick up and knit 2 sts in gap before cast on sts, pickup and knit 2 sts from cast-on sts, pickup and knit 2 sts in gap after cast on sts, join in rnd, pm to mark beginning of rnd. if desired. 24 sts Rnd 2: K18, k2tog tbl, k2, k2tog tbl. 22 sts Rnd 3: K18, (k2tog tbl .) twice. 20 sts Knit in the rnd until thumb measures 3 inches (7.5 cm) or desiredlength I knit mine until just the very tip of my thumb was showing Next Rnd: K17, k2tog twice (this will use 1 st from next rnd) 18 sts Next Rnd: \*K1, k2tog; rep from \* to end of rnd. 12 sts Next Rnd: \*K2tog; rep from \* to end of rnd. 6 sts Break yarn and thread onto yarn needle, Run yarn through remaining loops and pull tight. Thread to inside of thumb and weaveinend. Weave in all ends.
Left Mitten
Complete as for Right Mitten to just before Gusset Shaping. Rnd9: Needle 1: Knit Needle 2: K7, pm, kfb in next 2 sts, pm, k4 Needle 3: Continue in pattern as established Rnd 10: Needle 1: Knit Needle 2: K7, sm, knit sts between marker, sm, k4 Needle 3: Continue in pattern as established
Rnd 11:
Needle 1: Knit Needle 2: K7, sm, kfb, knit to 1 st before marker, kfb, slip marker, k4 Needle 3: Continue in pattern as established Repeat Rnds 10 and 11 six times more until there are 18 sts between the markers (29 sts on needle 2).
Next Rnd:
Needle 1: Knit Needle 2: K7, rm, slip 18 sts onto holder, rm, cast on 2 sts using backwards loop cast on, k4 Needle 3: Continue in pattern as established. Complete as for Right Mitten.
For Fingerless Mittens
Follow instructions for Right and Left Mittens until 3 repeats of Chart A are complete Do not work Chart B. Rnds 1-6: (All needles) - \*K1tbl, p1; rep from \* to end of rnd. Bind off in pattern.
Thumb:
Rnd 1: Place 9 sts from waste yarn onto each of two needles, attach yarn and knit these stitches, with spare needle pick up and knit 2 sts in gap before cast on sts, pickup and knit 2 sts from cast-on sts, pickup and knit 2 sts in gap after cast on sts, join in rnd, pm to mark beginning of rnd. if desired. 24 sts Rnd 2: K18, k2tog tbl, k2, k2tog tbl. 22 sts Rnd 3: K18, (k2tog tbl .) twice. 20 sts
Rnd 4-5: Knit
Rnd 6-10: \*K1tbl, p1; rep from \* to end of rnd. Bind off in pattern. Weave in all ends. Block by soaking mittens in warm soapy water for 30 minutes, remove water by rolling in a towel gently, place on a towel with front facing up and fold thumb behind. Stretch and flatten mitten into shape with your fingers and leave to dry. Now go and enjoy your mittens!!
