An easy and fun stranded hat in three colors of worsted yarn. This is a variation of the Madison's Hat pattern, and a great next step if the Madison's Hat was your first stranded hat. The yellow stitches on the top section make little W's, hence the name. 3 colors worsted-weight yarn (the sample used Lion Brand WoolEase). The rolled brim:
K all, using C1, for 1 1/2 inches.
The fair-isle section:
Join color 2 (C2). Follow the chart here (bottom-up, right to left), K all sts. Make sure you pass the C2 yarn under the C1 yarn, but pass the C1 yarn over the C2 while you knit. This keeps your yarns from getting tangled. But if you forget sometimes, don't worry! You can just untwist the yarns and keep going. Each row uses only two colors. When you reach a row using color 3 (C3), you will join C3, and break one of the other colors that is not needed in that row. Continue to join or break the colors for each row as necessary.
The crown: Now that you are done with the chart, K all in C1 until knitting (including flattened brim) is 5 1/4" [5 1/2", 5 3/4", 6", 6.5"] long. (You will need to switch to the double-pointed needles either now or after the next few rounds.) Decrease round 1: ${\bf\ddot{\sigma}}{\bf K}11$ [12, 13, 14, 16], K2tog, repeat from \* to the end of the round. Decrease round 2: K all. Decrease round 3: \*K10 [11, 12, 13, 15], K2tog, repeat from \* to the end of the round. Decrease round 4: K all.
Decrease round 5: \*K9 [10, 11, 12, 14], K2tog, repeat from \* to the end of the round. Decrease round 6: K all. Decrease round 7: $^{\ast}\mathrm{K}8$ [9, 10, 11, 13], K2tog, repeat from \* to the end of the round. Decrease round 8: \*K7 [8, 9, 10, 12], K2tog, repeat from \* to the end of the round.
Continue in this way, knitting one less stitch between K2tog each round, until 6 sts remain. Break yarn, pull yarn tail through the last 6 stitches with tapestry needle and pulltight to close the top of the hat. Weave in ends, and you have a warm, comfy, and colorful hat!
