NOTES

Pattern illustration

This pattern is writen toe-up, and intended for knitters who have made socks toe-up before. A chart for the instep (lace and toe increases) is included, as is one for the heel and another for the cuff. Follow the directions for the CO and increase for the sole of the sock in the same way the instep is charted (i.e. without lace). A key is included below to understand Charts A & C: KNIT PURL M MAKE 1 ST YARN OVER SSK K2TOG SL1, K2TOG, PSSO NO ST

CREDIT:

The instep lace pattern, is a slightly modified version of the traditional "Smiling Diamonds". The heel pattern is known as "German Ribbing" Both patterns can be found in Barbara Walkers A Treasury of Knitting Patterns. I made up the cuff pattern. The charts were made using the program KnitChart. I took all the photos of the socks on my feet, which isprobablyobvious, anyway.

SOCK #1

· Using the Turkish Cast On, CO 14 sts between 2 needles (7 sts on each). · Knit 1 row (Row 1 on Chart A). Divide sts between 4 needles as follows: 3 on N1, 4 on N2, 3 on N3, and 4 on N4. ·Place a marker between N1 and N4 if necessary - the instep will be worked on N1 & 2, the sole on N3 & 4. If you intend to use 2 circular needles, keep sts where they are and continue to . Following the chart, increase 4 sts every even numbered row (2 sts on the instep, 2 on the sole) while maintaining lace instep pattern. Do not work lace on sole (N3 & 4) - just knit between increases. · At the end of Row 20, there will be 54 sts total. · Rows 21 - 40 represent the 8-row lace repeat for the rest of the instep and cuff. Continue in this pattern (plain stockinette on the sole) until sock measures $z"$ less than desired length. End with an odd row.

Note on Chart B: row 1refers to the previous stockinete row, the heel starts on row 2 of the chart. Even #d rows are RS, odd #'d rows are WS.

.Work across N1 and N2 in pattern (even row), mark the row on the instep lace chart. For 2 circs: work across circ #1, heel will be worked on circ #2. . Using N5, knit across N3 and N4 to the last stitch, wrap it and turn. (Row 2 on chart) · Purl to last stitch, wrap it and turn. Continue to follow Chart B:

Once the heel has been turned, on RS (row 34) work across as charted. Before staring new row with N1/at instep,PU& K 2 sts between heel and instep with N4, to prevent gap. .Work across instep in pattern (should be an odd #'d row). ·PU & K2 sts between instep and heel with N3, work across back as charted and divide sts as follows: 13 sts on N3, 18 sts on N4. .For sizes A- C; work across instep, at heel: K1, SSK, work in pattern to last 3 sts, K2TOG, K1. Work next row even. Decrease 2 sts again for 54 sts total. · Continue to work sock ankle in pattern on both front and back. Choosing to redistribute heel stitches every pattern repeat willprevent inconsistencies in the knitting (i.e. every 6 rows work 16 sts on N3 & 11 sts on N4). Work 2 full repeats of instep lace, ending with row 20 of lace pattern (row 40 on Chart A).

CUFF

·Work both patterns in next row of pattern, increasing 2 sts evenly (56 sts total). Divide sts evenly between 4 needles, if desired. · Following Chart C (repeat for full row), knit cuff: Chartes Chaussettes Chart C
