Detailed Instructions for Knitting the Sock Leg and Preparing for the Heel (58 Rows Plus Heel Setup)

Pattern illustration

Clue 2:

Leg Continued...

Knit at least one more repeat of the 24 row leg stitch pattern for a total of 58 rows (10 rows of the cuff plus 2\*24 rows of the leg). If you want a longer sock then keep knitting - if you don't need a full third repeat to make your sock the desired length then just knit rows 1-12. For comparison: My sportweight sock was almost exactly 6" at this point, the fingering weight version was closer to 5" and got an extra 12 rows of the pattern to suit the wearer. When you are done with the sock leg it is time to work the heel.

Heel

Hint: If you are knitting contrasting toes and heels don't forget to change colors for the heel. Important: Although I am going to provide instructions for a specific heel KNIT WHATEVER HEEL YOU PREFER. I know some people prefer the fit of a flap heel - if that is you it is specifically allowed for this sock! Use your own formula if you have one or ask one of the lovely SKA knitters (or me) to help you figure one out. If you are new to socks and have a coach who wants to teach you a different heel go with that one. Notice that, if you follow my heel instructions (below) you will knit the toe and heel together as clue 4. If you are knitting a flap heel (or some other sort) your heel is going to be part of clue 2... \*\*\* This way to my heel instructions! Pattern Heel Instructions: What we are doing is the set up for a short-row afterthought heel. Step 1, designate the first half of your stitches as sole stitches and the second half as instep stitches. Step 2, using a piece of contrasting waste yarn knit the 24 (30, 36) sole stitches, leaving a 6" tail on either end. Cut the waste yarn. Step 3, using your main color yarn and continuing from where you left off (before you knit the contrasting color) knit the 24 (30, 36) sole stitches you just knit - you will be using the main color yarn to reknit the stitches you just knit with contrasting color yarn. Yup, all of those stitches just got knit twice. Step 4, using your main color yarn knit the 24 (30, 36) instep stitches. End of Clue 2.
