Cockleshell Hero: A Versatile Neck-Shoulder Shawl Pattern with Adapted Lace Border

Pattern illustration

Cockleshell Hero

This delightfully simple neck/shoulder shawl will certainly get your talked about for all the right reasons. It is an extremely versatile fashion accessory and can be worn in a number of ways but not only that it is simple to make, the adapted Cockleshell Lace border is easier than it looks. I used my Slinky Sock Yarn which is a combination Superwash Merino and Tencel (originates from wood pulp of all things!), has a silky look and is machine washable, however it would be possible to make this garment in any sockweight yarn.

MATERIALS

2 x 100 grams Woolhunter Slinky Sock Yarn 333 metres in length. I actually only used around 125 grams so you could make the garment shorter i.e. less shell repeats if you only wanted to use one skein. Similarly you could make this shawl in other weights of yarn as well and maybe on larger needles to suit.

TENSION:

Not particularly important as the garment will be blocked upon completion and everyone's individual tension is unique but aim for 22 sts and 30 rows per 4 inch square in stocking stitch. On completion the garment should be blocked to the following dimensions:- Wingtip to Wingtip = 60 inches; Centre Depth = 21 inches.

NEEDLES

1 x Pair Needle sizes 4.00 mm/Us Size 6 and 5.00 mm/Us 8, 1 stitch marker and a darning needle to sew in loose ends.

ABBREVIATIONS:

k2tog = knit 2 together Kfb = knit in front and back of stitch (ie increasing by one st) P2tog = purl 2 together sl 1 = slip 1 stitch knitways slm = slip marker ssk = slip the next 2 stitches knitwise onto the right hand needle, insert left hand needle back into the stitches, knit the two together. (2 stitches become one and this makes a left slanting decrease). wyifsl1p = with yarn in front (as if to purl) slip stitch purlways yo = yarn over needle/yarn round needle

Repeat them 3 times more. Your are have now reached a third of the way through the garment. Next, repeat these 32 rows four times more for the centre section of the garment BUT WITHOUT increasing i.e. by omitting the KFB on every Right Side Row after the pattern section i.e. Row 1 would read as follows:- Row 1: yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k10, yo, k2 tog, k1, slm, knit to end. When 8 pattern repeats have been worked in total, you have now reached two-thirds the way through the garment. At this point if you wish to make the garment longer from wingtip to wingtip simply work more pattern repeats. Similarly if you want to shorten the garment, work less pattern repeats. New row commence pattern deceases by working an SsK where previously on the increasing right side rows you would have worked a KFB, i.e. Row 1 will now read as follows:- Row 1: yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k10, yo, k2 tog, k1, slm, ssk, knit to end. Finally cast off using the larger 5mm needles. Sew in all loose ends and block to dimensions given above.
