Game mat / pot holder

Make a slipknot on your needle with both yarns together for fastening and use it as the first pair of stitches. Long-tail cast on with both yarns over forefinger and one(long tail) over thumb for 21(elephant)/23(tic-tac-toe) double stitches. -First pair of stitches is always slipped together purlwise leaving the yarns front of work. Return both yarns to back between the first and second pair of stitches. - 2. to last pair of sts; front stitch knitted with the front color and reverse stitch purled with the reverse color. For purling, both yarns are brought front of work. -Last pair of each row is knitted with both yarns together. (Knitted 2tog with double yarn)

Every square equals a pair (1knit & 1purl) stitches. Colored squares of chart are worked with reverse colors (knit with reverse color, purl with front color). Every even row is read from left to right if making the elephant chart. Cast-off using only one color, knit together(ssk) each pair of stitches and slip the first stitch over the second stitch on RH needle. @virpi Tarvo
