MOHAIR BLEND MITTENS
I designed these specifically for whittling down a stash, and for keeping me warm on long, cold nights with my astronomy class. Tuck in the ends as you knit, or finishing will takeforever. You'll always be working with two strands of yarn at the same time—one wool, one mohair (except for the ribbing)—-which produces a tweedy look. The combinations change so that the colors blend from one stripe to the next. With this gauge, the fabric is very dense. The hat in the picture is not included in the directions, because it's a copyrighted pattern. It's there to show you that any pattern can be adapted to the blended stripe. Go nuts!

Materials
About 4 oz. [5 oz.] total of wool and mohair: 5-6 colors of worsted wool (A, B, C, D, etc.) 5-6 colors of mohair (b, c, d, etc.), in similar colors to the wool. B will be a similar color to b, C similar to c, D similar to d. Size #5 and #7 dp needles
Gauge
17 sts & 22 R = 4 × 4 in. on #7 needles this is an average gauge, knit with one strand each of wool and mohair Finished Measurements women's [men's] size
Instructions
Left and right mittens are knit the same. On #5 dp needles, CO 30 sts with A+B. Divide evenly between needles. Join. Work in k1 p1 rib 2 % in. [3 in.]. Mittens are knit in st st, in stripe pattern as follows: 3 rnd B+b, 3 rnd C+b, 3 rnd C+c, 3 rnd D+c, 3 rnd D+d, etc. The stripes can be more or less than 3 rnd, to break up the monotony. Since they're knit in the round, you can start a new color anywhere, not just at the beginning of a rnd. Change to B+b yarn and #7 dp. K 1 rnd, inc 4 sts evenly (34 sts). Then k 4 [6] more rnds. Gusset R1: k2, inc 1, kl, inc 1, k to end of rnd. R2, R3: k. R4: k2, inc 1 k3 inc 1, k to end of rnd. R5, R6: k. R7: k2, inc 1 k3 inc 1, k to end of rnd. R8, R9: k. R10: k2, inc 1 k3 inc 1, k to end of rnd. When gusset is finished, k2, place 11 sts on a piece of yarn (to be used for thumb later), CO 3 sts, k to end of rnd (34 sts). K until mitten measures 9 %4 in. [10 % in.] from beg of rib (or desired length). Repeat for second mitten. There's really no need to block.
