Flip-Flop Flip-Top Mittens
Directions are written for adult small (medium, large sizes are in parenthesis).

Supplies:
1 skein Solitude Leicester Longwool/Border Leicester or any worsted weight yarn. Size US 7 dpn or circular needles Tapestryneedle Stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding thumb stitches. Gauge: 5 sts per inch using size 7 needles
Right Mitten:

Cuff Cast on 36 (40, 44) stitches with US 7 needle and join being careful not to twist. Work in 2x2 ribbing for 16 rounds or to desired length of cuff. Hand \*Knit 1 round. Next round: k1, m1, k to 1 st before end of round, m1, k1\* Repeat previous two rounds between \* \* 2x more (42, 46, 50). Knit in st st 12 (13, 14) rounds. Next round: k to 3 (3, 4) sts before end of round. Place next 8 (8, 10) sts on stitch holder or scrapyarn. Continue knitting in the round on remaining 34 (38, 40) sts, pulling yarn tight between what is now the last st and first st of round. Knit in st st 6 (7, 8) more rounds. Working back and forth on palm sts only, work the first 17 (19, 20) sts in 1x1 rib for 4 rows. Bind off ribbed sts. Only back of hand sts remain (17, 19, 20). Break yarn.
Flip Top
Attach yarn at beginning of back of hand sts and knit to end. Cast on 17 (19, 20) sts, join to back of hand sts and k17 (19, 20) sts to end of round. Work next 4 rounds as follows: Work 17 (19, 20) sts (new palm sts) in 1x1 rib, k to end of round. Resume knitting all sts in st st for 12 (14, 16) more rounds, or until mitten is 1 to 1 12 inches short of desired length. \*SSK, k to 2 sts before end of palm, k2tog, SSK, k to 2 sts before end of round, k2tog.\* Repeat round between \* \* until 6 (6, 8) sts remain. Sew yarn through remaining loops and pull to close. Weave in ends.

Thumb
Remove thumb placeholder sts. Place sts on needles. Attach yarn and k 8 (8, 10) sts, pick up 4 (6, 6) sts. Divide 12 (14, 16) sts onto 4 dpn and work in the round in st st for 12 rounds, or to within 12 inch of desired length of thumb. \*SSK, k to 2 sts before end of front of thumb, k2tog, SSK, k to 2 sts before end of round, k2tog.\* Repeat round between \* \* until 4 (6, 4) sts remain. Sew yarn through remaining loops and pull to close. Weave in ends.
Finishing
nitten inside out. Sew sides of lower palm ribbing to inside of mitten to tack it in place
Left Mitten:

Work as for right mitten until just before the round where the lower palm ribbing begins. Work left mitten as follows: K17 (19, 20) sts, then work back and forth on next 17, (19, 20) sts in 1x1 rib for 4 rows. Bind off ribbed sts. Only back of hand sts remain (17, 19, 20). Break yarn. Attach yarn at beginning of back of hand sts and knit to end. Cast on 17 (19, 20) sts, join to back of hand sts. This join is the new beginning of round. Continue as for right mitten.
