Summer's End

A versatile lace cardigan, worked from the bottom up with minimal seaming. Perfect for layering on those cooler nights as summer winds to a close. US 8 24" or longer circular needle or size needed to get gauge US 6 24" circular needle Set of 5 US 8 DPNs 12 Stitch markers (4 distinguishable) Note: markers are also recommended to separate lace repeats across body of cardigan. You will need an additional 12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 21) markers. Darning needle Waste yarn 4 5/8" buttons
Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows $=4^{\,"}$ in St st using larger needles.
Abbreviations:
yo: yarnover K2tog: knit two stitches together SSK: slip two stitches knitwise, one at a time. insert left needle into the front loops of the slipped stitches and knit them together from this position (through the back loops). S2kpsso: Slip two stitches together as if to knit, knit the next stitch, pass slipped stitches over. M1: Insert left needle under bar between last stitch on needle and next stitch, from front to back. Knit stitch through the back loop.

Lace Chart
Pattern:
Body - With larger circular needles, CO 138 (160, 182, 204, 226, 237) sts. Do not join. Work 4 rows in garter stitch.

Next Row (Rs) - K3, pm, work row 1 of lace chart (chart is repeated 12(14, 16, 18, 20, 21) times across row - place markers between repeats if necessary) to last 3 stitches, pm, k3. Continue working lace chart, keeping first and last 3 stitches of every row in St st, until work measures 9" from CO edge, ending with a Ws row. Next Row (Rs) - Switch to smaller circular needles. Work 4 rows in garter stitch. Next Row (Rs) - Switch to larger circular needles. Work in St st until work measures 12" or desired length to underarm from CO edge, ending with a Ws row. Set aside.
Sleeves -
With dpns, CO 39 (39, 39, 51, 51, 51) sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Work 4 rounds in garter stitch. Next round - K 14 (14, 14, 20, 20, 20) pdm,work row 1 of lace chart, pdm,k 14 (14, 14, 20, 20, 20). Lace chart is now worked in the round, so even rounds will be knit instead of purled. Continue working lace chart between markers, and shape sleeves as follows: K1, m1, work to last stitch, m1, k1 every 8 (8, 8, 6, 6, 6) rounds 7 (8, 9, 11, 12, 13) times. 53 (55, 57, 73, 75, 77) sts. Work even if necessary until sleeve measures 12 (12, 13, 13, 14, 14)" from CO edge, or desired length to underarm.

Next round - Work to last 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5) sts. Place next 8 (8, 8, 10, 10, 10) sts on waste yarn. Set aside. Note: Make a note of where you ended on the lace chart, in order for sleeves to match. Repeat for 2nd sleeve.
Join body and sleeves --
With RS facing, k across 32 (36, 42, 46, 52, 55)for right front, place next 8 (8, 8, 10, 10, 10) body sts on waste yarn, k across 45 (47, 49, 63, 65, 67) sleeve sts, k across 62 (72, 82, 92, 102, 107) back sts, place next 8 (8, 8, 10, 10, 10) body stitches on waste yarn, k across 45 (47, 49, 63, 65, 67) sleeve stitches, k across 32 (36, 42, 46, 52, 55) stitches for left front. 216 (238, 264, 310, 336, 351) total sts. Next row (Ws) - p31 (35, 41, 45, 51, 54), pm, p3, pm, p 41 (43, 45, 59, 61, 63), pm, p3, pm, p60 (70, 80,90, 100, 105), pm, p3, pm, p 41 (43, 45, 49, 59,61, 63), pm, p3, pm, p 31 (35, 41, 45, 51,54) Begin Raglan decreases - Next row (RS and all RS rows) - k to 2 sts before first marker, ssk, slm, yo, s2kpsso, yo, sIm, k2tog: rep to end. Continue working lace chart on sleeves between distinguishable markers. (Note: when decreases begin to interrupt lace chart, continue working lace as able; each yo is paired with a decrease - do not work the yo or decrease if there are not enoughststoworkboth.) Next row (WS and all WS rows) - p all sts. Repeat these 2 rows 18 (20, 22, 26, 28, 30) times total and at the same time work neck shaping as follows: On every other RS row: k1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 Rep neck shaping 8 (9, 10, 12, 14, 14) times total. 56 (60, 68, 78, 84, 83) sts remain. BO all sts.
Finishing -
Using larger circular needles, with RS facing and beginning at lower right front, pick up and k 2 sts for every 3 rows along right front edge, 1 st in each BO st along top neckline, then 2 sts for every 3 rows along left front edge; placing markers on right front directly after garter st band on bodice, and at the beginning of neck shaping. Buttonholes will be worked between these two markers. Work 3 rows in garter stitch. Next row - K to marker, work 4 yo buttonholes evenly spaced between markers, k to end. Work 3 more rows in garter stitch. BO allstitches in purl. Seam held underarm stitches using kitchener stitch. Weave in ends. Sew buttons in place opposite buttonholes. Block lightly to open lace.
