A row counter is helpful yarnneedle pins for blocking
Gauge:
24 sts/ 30 rows =4" in stockinette stitch
Pattern Notes and abbreviations:
sl 1: slip one stitch knit-wise on right-side rows and purl-wise on wrong-side rows. kf&b: increase stitch by knitting in the front and then the back of the same stitch. sk2p: slip one stitch knit-wise, knit the next two stitches together and pass the slipped stitch over the knit two together. p2tog-tbl: purl two together through the back loop.
Pattern
First Section:
Cast on 11 stitches. The following rows form the first section of the shawl. Row 1: sl 1, k1, \*yo, sl 1, k1, yo, pass the sl st over the k1 and following yo\*, end k1 Row 2: sl 1, \*p2, drop the proceeding row's yos\* Row 3: sl 1, k2, \*yo, sl 1, k1, yo, pass the sl st over the k1 and foll yo\*, end k2 Row 4: sl 1, p3, \*drop the proceeding row's yos, p2\*, end p Increase Row 1: sl 1, \*yo, k1\*. 21 stitches. Increase Row 2: sl 1, purl across all stitches Work 8 rows of the first stitch pattern and then work increase rows again to 41 stitches. Work 16 rows of the first stitch pattern and then work increase rows again to 79 stitches. Work 32 rows of the first stitch pattern and then work increase rows again to 159 stitches. Second Section:
The next 8 rows form the stitch pattern for the second portion of the shawl. Row 1: sl 1, k2, \*yo, k1, sk2p, k1, yo, k1\*, repeat to last 8 sts of the row, yo, k1, sk2p, k1, yo, k3. Border and Edging:
Break off yarn. Using the second pair of needles cast on 28 stitches with the cable cast on method and work first row of border and edging. Now, work next wrong side row and when you reach the last stitch of the edging, purl this stitch together with the first stitch of the shawl body. You will now knit the third row using the circular needle holding the shawl body for the remainder of the edging. Continue connecting the border and edging to the body of the shawl in this manner, purling the last stitch of the edging together with the next stitch of the shawl body until all body stitches have been worked.
