Warm Willies Gloves

Materials:
Approximately 100 yards of heavy worsted weight yarn for one pair of gloves. Model uses Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, 1 skein of Dusty blue. Crochet hook in US size J $\left(6\,\mathsf{m m}\right)$ and 1 $(5.5\;\mathsf{m m})$ Gauge: $16\;\mathsf{s t s}=4^{\prime\prime}$ $16\,\mathsf{r o w s}=4^{\prime\prime}$ with J hook (glove body). Adjust hook size as needed to obtain correct gauge. Glove sizes are: $6.5^{\prime\prime}$ for small, $7.5^{\prime\prime}$ for medium, and $8.5^{\prime\prime}$ for large (in diameter measured on the outside).

Make 2 gloves. Use larger hookformain glove body and smaller hookfor ribbing and a tighterfinishing round at the top of the glove. Pattern is written for size small $(6.5^{\prime\prime})$ with changes in parentheses for medium (7.5") and large $(8.5^{\prime\prime})$ Ribbing: With smaller hook, ch 11 (12, 13). sc in $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ ch from hook and in each ch $\mathsf{a c r o s s{=}10}$ (11, 12) sc. Each row: ch1, turn.Scinbothloops infirst st, sc in back loop only next 8(9, 10) sts, sc in bothloops last st. Repeat this row for a total of 23 (27, 31) rows. Band Seam: After the last row, remove hook from last st worked. Fold ribbed band in half with wrong sides together, short ends matched. Insert hook in first remaining loop from beginning chain and grab the loop from the last st worked and pullthrough remaining loop. Pullthe yarn snug (not too tight though) against the needle and ch 1. Starting with very first remaining loop where you just joined, sc ends together matching 10 (11, 12)remaining loops and stitches from last row worked. At the end, do not break off yarn. Turn work 90 degrees and continue working in ends of ribbed rows for glove body. Rnd 1 (foundation rnd): Change to larger hook and ch 1, 2 sc in first row end. (Skip 1 row end, 2 sc in next row end) around. After you have gone all the way around the cuff, do not sl st, just keep working in continuous rounds $=\!24$ (28, 32) sc. Place marker for beginning of rounds (use a safety pin or scrap of yarn) to keep track. Rnd 2 (increase rnd): (3 sc in next, skip 1 sc) twice. (2 sc in next, skip 1 sc) remainder of round $=$ Increased 2 sts. Rnd 3: 2 sc in first sc of previous rnd. Skip 1, (2 sc in next, skip 1) around. (Note: always be sure you are putting your 2-sc group in the $\mathbf{1^{st}}$ stitch of the 2-sc group on the previous round. The exception is when you are stitching over the increases. But once you are past the increases, you should be back to working in the $1^{\mathrm{{st}}}$ st again.) Continuing around top of glove, (dc in next, sc in next st-no skipping) around for 1 rnd. Sl st in next 2 sc to smooth out the top edge. Finish off and weave in end. Button strap: With larger hook ch 11. 3 sc in $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ ch from hook, scin next 8, 6 sc in end, sc in rem 8 loops other side. 3 sc in ${\boldsymbol{1}}^{\mathrm{{st}}}$ join with sl st. Finish offleaving long tail for sewing. Sew strap across top of glove at wrist. Sew buttons at each end of strap. $\circledcirc$ Susan Hinton, July 2009
