High Fashion Whimsical Baby Hats By Cori Eichelberger NOTE: With so much novelty yarn out there to choose from it seems that even the babies of the world should be more dressed up! Yarn: 150 yards of a very soft baby yarn AND 40-50 yards of novelty yarn Examples: Yellow sample was knit with Lion Brand Micro Spun #158 and yellow, orange and red Crystal Palace Splash. Purple sample was knit with Crystal Palace Cotton Flamme #39 and lime Lion Brand Fun Fur #194. Pink sample was knit with ReynoldsUtopia #205. Sizes: 6 months, 1 year, 2 years (Thickness of novelty yarn will play a role in the size of the hat at crown.) Needle: Size 7 16" circular needles Size 7 double pointed needles Notions: 1 marker Gauge: 5 sts and 7 $\mathsf{r o w s}=1$ inch in St. st. Finished Measurements: approximately 15" (16", 17") at crown

Add novelty yarn and join being careful not to twist and knit in the round evenly for 1 inch. Drop novelty yarn and continue to knit for approximately 30, (32, or 34) rows. You may add texture to the knitted part of the hat by knitting a checkerboard ( $^{\star}\mathsf{K}5$ P5\* repeat around) for 5 rounds than ( $^{\star}\mathsf{P5}$ ${\sf K5^{\star}}$ repeat around) for 5 rounds. OR $^{\star}\mathsf{K}4$ ,P1,\* repeat around,) K 4 rounds plain than repeat "purl dots" OR seed stitch ( $^{\star}\mathsf{K}1$ ,P1\* repeat around) than next round (\*P1, K1,\* repeat around.) Novelty stripe hat: Try making a novelty yarn stripe every $5^{\mathrm{th}}$ row by adding back the novelty yarn with your working yarn. Novelty “dot" top: Add novelty yarn back to your working yarn for the last 3 decrease rows.
DECREASES:
When hat measures $4^{\ast}$ (4 1/2", 5") begin decrease rounds. Row 1: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}8$ , K2tog\* repeat Row 2: $\mathbf{\times}\mathbf{K}7$ , K2tog\* repeat Row 3: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}6$ , K2tog \* repeat Row 4: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{5}$ , K2tog \* repeat Row 5: $\star\mathsf{K}4$ , K2tog \* repeat Row 6: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}3$ , K2tog \* repeat Row 7: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}2$ , K2tog \* repeat Row 8: \*K1, K2tog \* repeat Row 9: K2tog around (7 stitches remain) Cut yarn and thread through needle and pull needle through each of the 7 live stitches.
