I was looking for a pattern that would work with a self-striping yarn that wasn't worked in garter stitch. I love lace edgings and fingering weight yarn and was wondering if I could design a shawl for a strong self-striping sock yarn. I could and I did and I am very pleased with the results. The name came from two sources: the colour name of the yarn I bought and the friend I made it for who travels between New MexicoandCalifornia. Description: a sideways knitted, shawlette with lace edging and garter stitch top border included in the design.Pattern is both charted and written Yarn: Loops & Threads Luxury Sock (60% Fine Merino Super Wash Wool, 30% Nylon, 10% Cashmere) 50 grams at 229.6 yrds per skein. Total Skeins: 2 Needle Size: US Size 5 Gauge: isn't that important as this is a sideways shawlette. Work the Increase Chart until halfway through the yarn, then work the Decrease Chart until done. The length and width of the shawlette will depend on the yarn, the needle size and your imagination. Blocked Measurements: 77 from tip to tip, 13.75" at it's widest point Experience Level: beginning lace Supplies: stitch marker, yarn needle (for weaving in ends), blocking aids. Pattern: The top is a 3 stitch garter edge with a lace pattern of k2tog and YO's on the bottom. Increases and decreases take place in the center of the shawl using YO's and k2togs. You will begin every right side row with a yarn over knit 2 together then follow the chart(s) working from right to left. You will begin every wrong side row by slipping the first stitch knitwise with yarn in back, knit 2, purl to end. CO 20 stitches and work 3 rows of garter stitch ending with a wrong side row \*\* 3 stitch Garter Stitch on the neck edge is not shown on the charts\* Starting with Row 1 of the Increase Chart repeat the 32 row pattern until halfway through the yarn . End the Increase Chart after either Row 16 or Row 32. The sample shown was worked 6 % times ending on row 16. Work the Decrease Chart until only 20 stitches remain ending after Row 32 (skip the very last k2tog on row 31). Work 3 rows of Garter Stitch and B0. Weave in ends and block. Redwoods Written Directions: Row 1: YO, k2tog, k1, YO, k12, PM, k1, YO, knit to end. Row 2 (and all wrong side rows): slip 1 stitch kw wyib, k2, purl to end.
