JASPER?
design by Amy E. Anderson Caution, this sweater might make him feel like yodeling! Then, he'll want a pair of lederhosen - with hand-knit knee socks, of course. The motivating idea behind this design was “keep it simple:. Directions are given for 4 sizes. If only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. Materials: Cascade 220, worsted weight wool 9 (9, 10, 11) skeins 3 buttons, size 3/8" Needles: Size 3 and size 5, 29" circular 1 cable needle Gauge: 11 sts $=2^{\ast}$ in Double Moss on larger needles.
Finished Dimensions:
Chest at armpits: $431/2^{"}$ (47", 51", 541/2") Body Length: $24^{\ast}$ (25", 26", 27") Body Length to armholes: $14\%^{\ast1}$ (15", 15%2", 16") Sleeve Length: $17\%^{\ast}$ $181\%^{\ast}$ , $18\%^{\prime}$ , 191/4") Garter Rib: (worked in the round - multiple of 5 sts): Round 1: P1 $^{\star}\mathsf{K}3$ $\mathsf{P}2^{\star}$ repeat \* - \*, ending P1. Round 2: Knit. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 for pattern. Garter Rib: (worked flat - multiple of $5+3)$ Round 1: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}3$ , $\mathsf{P}2^{\star}$ repeat \* - \*, ending K3. Round 2: Purl. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 for pattern. Double Moss Stitch (on an even # of sts) Row 1 (RS): $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , $\mathsf{P}\mathsf{1}^{\star}$ repeat \* - \*. Row 2 (WS): $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , $\mathsf{P}\mathsf{1}^{\star}$ repeat \* - \*. Row 3: \*P1, $\mathsf{K}1^{\star}$ repeat \* - \*. Row 4: $^{\star}\mathsf{P}\,^{\star}$ , $\mathsf{K}1^{\star}$ repeat \* - \*. Repeat Rows 1-4 for pattern.
Note: Body is worked in the round to the armholes.
With smaller needle CO 216 (234, 252, 270) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts, and Knit 5 rds. Next rd: Knit around, increasing 24 (26, 28, 30) sts evenly spaced (knit into the front and back of every $9^{\mathrm{th}}$ st). You will have 240 (260, 280, 300) sts total. Work in Garter Rib for $3"$ Switch to larger needle and continue in Garter Rib until body measures $1312^{"}$ (14", $14\%^{\ast}$ , 15") ending so that last round worked is a plain knit rd. Work Horizontal Divider Pattern as follows: Purl 3 rds. Knit 3 rds. Purl 3 rds. Slip 120 (130, 140, 150) sts to scrap yarn and set aside for back yoke. Front Yoke: For Size Medium and X-Large: Turn and with WS facing, P2 tog, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog. For Size Small and Large: Turn and purl 1 row. 4/11/00 Uitai yulul pIauneis (IuI all sio) as Iulluws. Note: You'll need to pay attention on the next 2 rows, but don't fret; just take it one direction at a time and everything will fall into place. Next row (RS): Work 56 (60, 66, 70) sts in Double Moss, PM, work [K into front and back of next st, P into front and back of next st] 4 times, PM (Note: you will have 16 sts between the 2 markers), work to end of row in Double Moss Stitch, starting with a knit st. Divide Button Plackets as follows: Next row (WS): Work to $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ marker in Double Moss, work [K1, slip 1 to CN held at back of work, P1, slip 1 to CN} 4 times, then slip all 8 sts from CN to left needle, and then slip all 64 (68, 74, 78) sts from left needle to scrap yarn and set aside for Left Front Yoke. Work Right Front Yoke as follows: Continue to work in Double Moss Stitch until yoke is 7" (7/2", 8", 8y2") long, measuring from the top of the Horizontal Divider Pattern. End so next row worked will have RS facing. Work neck shaping as follows: Next row (RS): Work 18 (18, 20, 20) sts and slip them to a holder, work to end of row in pattern. BO 2 sts at the beginning of RS rows 2 (2, 2, 4) times. Then, BO 1 st at the beginning of RS rows 4 (4, 4, 2) times. You wil have 38 (42, 46, 48) sts remaining. Continue until yoke measures. $9^{1}/{2}^{"}$ (10", $10\%^{\ast}$ ,11"), ending so next row worked would have Ws facing. Slip all sts to holder for left shoulder.
Left Front Yoke:
Put the 64 (68, 74, 78) left front sts back on needles, s0 first row worked will have WS facing. Continue to work in Double Moss Stitch starting with Row #2 of stitch pattern. Make buttonholes at the following point measuring from the top of the Horizontal Divider Pattern:

All buttonholes are worked on WS rows, as follows: Work 3 sts, BO 2 sts, work to end of row in pattern. On next row, Cast on 2 sts to replace the 2 sts that were bound off. Continue until yoke is $7^{"}\left(7^{1}/2^{"},\,8^{"},\,8^{1}/2^{"}\right)$ tall, ending so next row will have Ws facing. Work neck shaping as follows: Next row (Ws) Work 18 (18, 20, 20) sts and slip them to a holder, work to end of row in pattern. BO 2 sts at the beginning of WS rows 2 (2, 2, 4) times. Then, BO 1 st at the beginning of WS rows 4 (4, 4, 2) times. You wil have 38, 42 (46, 48) sts remaining. Continue until yoke measures. $9^{1}/{2}^{"}$ (10", 10%2", 11"), ending so next row worked would have WS facing. Slip all sts to holder for left shoulder.

Back Yoke:
Put the 120 (130, 140, 150) sts back on needle so that first row worked will have WS facing. For Size Medium and X-Large: With WS facing. P2tog, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog. Continue for all sizes as follows: Work in Double Moss Stitch until back yoke is $\texttt{9}^{1}/\!\!_{2}^{\,\,\,\,\,\,}$ (10", 10 %2", 11") tall, measuring from the top of the Horizontal Divider Pattern, ending so next row worked would have WS facing. Slip 38 (42, 46, 48) sts to holder for left shoulder, slip 44 (44, 48, 52) sts to holder for back neck, slip 38 (42, 46, 48) sts to holder for right shoulder.
Knit together and bind off shoulder seams on WS, as follows:
Slip one set of front shoulder sts onto one needle. Slip one set of the back shoulder sts onto another needle. Hold these two needles so that the RS are together and you're looking at the WS. Using a $3^{\mathsf{r d}}$ needle, knit together and bind off as follows: Insert needle through 1 st on the front needle and 1 st on the back needle, and knit these 2 sts together. Repeat for the next st on the front and back needle, then lift the first st on the right needle over the $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ st to bind off, as you would in ordinary knitting. Continue working in this manner to the end of the row.
Collar:
With smaller size circular needle and RS facing, Knit the 18 (18, 20, 20) sts from right front holder, PU 16 (16, 16, 17) sts from right neck edge, Knit the 44 (44, 48, 52) sts from back neck holder, PU 16 (16, 16, 17) sts from left neck edge, Knit the 18 (18, 20,20) sts from left front holder. You will have 112 (112, 120, 126) sts total. Work in Stockinette Stitch for 7 rows (begin and end with a purl row). Next row (RS): Bind off all sts.
Sleeves (worked flat):
Work in Stockinette Stitch for 5 rows, beginning and ending with a purl row. Next row (RS): Switch to larger needles and knit across, increasing 7 (10, 12, 14) sts evenly spaced. You will have 53 (58, 63, 68) sts total. Work in Garter Rib Stitch, increasing 1 st at the beginning and end of every $4^{\mathrm{th}}$ row until you have a total of 103 (108, 113, 118) sts. Continue even until sleeve is $16\%^{,1}$ (17", $171/2^{"}$ , 18") tall, or 1/4" shorter than desired finished length. Work Horizontal shoulder pattern as follows: Row 1 (WS): Knit Row 2 (RS): Purl Row 10: Knit across, binding off all sts. Repeat for second sleeve. Note: Sleeve length is highly individual, and is affected by the fit of the body. I strongly recommend that you finish the body and try it on. With arm extended, measure the length from wristbone to shoulder seam.
Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Block sweater by laying it flat between 2 damp towels overnight. Sew sleeves onto body. Sew buttons onto front placket.
