Tiered Crochet Christmas Tree Pattern: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Festive, Customizable Decoration

Tiered Crochet Christmas tree.

This tree has been crocheted using DMC Natura cotton (4ply) and a 3mm hook, other yarns and yarn weights can be used something with a good stitch definition is best as it gives the best shape and makes the edges'crisp'. The finished tree with 5 sections measures 5 inches (13cm) x 4 inches (10cm) this can be changed by using a different weight yarn or by increasing or decreasing the amount of sections worked- guidelines for this are at the bottom of the pattern.

Notes:

Sst- stitch. sc- single crochet (UK double crochet). inc- 2 single crochet into same stitch (UK 2 double crochet into same stitch). dec- single crochet 2 together (UK double crochet 2 together). tbl- work through the back loop only. tfl- work through the front loop only. Crochet in a continuous spiral, marking the last stitch of the round with a stitch marker, stitch counts at the end of each round are given in brackets. If you would like to hang your tree, make a loop as follows: ch 20 and cut yarn, leaving about 4 inches of yarn either side, before closing the loop fully in step 1. thread the yarn ends of the ch through the magic loop (so you have the loop of chain sts on the right side of the tree) knot the ends together to form a large not to secure it and close the magic loop fully. Darn in the ends when you've worked a few more rounds to secure further.

To start:

1. Make a magic loop and work 6 sc into it, tighten loop to close hol 2. sc into each st. [6] 3. (inc, sc in next st) repeat 3 times. [9] 4. (inc, sc in next 2 sts) repeat 3 times. [12] 5. [42] 53. (dec, sc in next 5 sts) repeat 6 times. [36] Pause here to stuff your tree! You need it to be plump but not too full otherwise there's not so much definition in the edges. 54. (dec, sc in next 4 sts) repeat 6 times. [30] 55. (dec, sc in next 3 sts) repeat 6 times. [24] 56. (dec, sc in next 2 sts) repeat 6 times. [18] 57. (dec, sc in next st) repeat 6 times. [12] 58. dec 6 times. [6] Cut the yarn leaving about a 4 inch tail and pull through the loop on the hook, using a darning needle sew through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches, pull thread tight, knot and thread through the inside of the tree to hide the yarn end. Decorate however you wish!

Notes on changing the size: Using a thicker or thinner yarn will the size of the finished tree, you just need to make sure that the hook you use gives a firm, relatively dense fabric. You can also work more or less sections, To work just the top three: This would be just the right size to hang on a Christmas tree, work up to and including row 29, then jump to row 52 and work up to row 58 to complete the tree. To work the top four sections: Work up to and including row 38, then jump to row 50 and work to row 58 to complete the tree. If you want to make the tree bigger you can carry on making tiers, work up to row 48 then carry on as follows: work 4 rounds increasing 3 sts each round, ? work 2 rounds increasing 6 sts each round, work 1 round through the back loops decreasing 12 sts, work 1 round decreasing 6 sts, work 1 round through the front loops increasing 6 sts These 5 steps make 1 tier, repeat these 5 steps until you have the number of tiers you want, to work out how many sc to work in between the increases/ decreases: Increasing 3 sts- total number of sts minus 3, divided by 3 Increasing 6 sts- total number of sts minus 6, divided by 6 Decreasing 12 sts- total number of sts minus 24, divided by 12 Decreasing 6 sts- total number of sts minus 12, divided by 6 Increasing 6 sts- total number of sts minus 6, divided by 6 Eg: Working the round after 48 would be 66-3=63, 63/3=21 s0 you would work 21sc in between the increasests. When you have the number of tiers you want make the base by decreasing 6 sts each round until you just have 6 sts left, finish off as on the end of page 2. If your tree looses it's shape a little bit you can reshape it by squishing the top down, this will emphasise the edges a bit more:
