Tangled Rose Socks by Linda Antons

I love knitting socks in worsted weight yarn, simply because it is so quick, but as most of the patterns I have found for them are very basic I have started experimenting on making my own. This pattern came to be when a young cousin of mine asked me to knit her a pair of socks and it is written in a woman's medium size, but can easily be adjusted by adding or subtracting from the purled border around the center cable. The pattern is written for magic loop, or two circular needles, but an experienced sock knitter would probably have no problem knitting the socks on dpn's. Yarn: Worsted weight, 100 gr, 180 m. Needles: 3-3,5 mm Gauge: 5 stitches = 2,5 cm Leg: Loosely cast on 48 stitches and connect in a circle. You should have 24 stitches on each needle/each side. Knit rib for 2,5 cm. as follows: k1, p2,\*k2, p2\* k1. Continue leg with cable chart. The cable chart should be knit on both the front and the back of the leg. The sample sock is knit with two repeats of the cable chart, but you could knit as few or as many as you like, but I would recommend to quit for the heel flap after row 8 or 16 for the sake of symmetry.

Heel flap: The heel flap is knit over the first 24 stitches, the stitches on needle/side 1. Round 1. \*Slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, knit 1\* Repeat til end of needle / side. TURN Round 2. Slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front, purl til end of round. Repeat round 1 and 2 nine more times. Heel turn: Round 1 (right side): slip 1 stitch, knit 14, knit 2 together through back loop, knit 1, TURN Round 2 (wrong side).: slip 1, purl 7, purl 2 together, purl 1, TURN Round 3. slip 1, knit 8, knit 2 together through back loop, knit 1, TURN Round 4: slip 1, purl 9, purl 2 together, purl 1, TURN Round 5: slip 1, knit 10, knit 2 together through back loop, knit 1, TURN Round 6: slip 1, purl 11, purl 2 together, purl 1, TURN Round 7: slip 1, knit 12, knit 2 together through back loop, knit 1, TURN Round 8. slip 1, purl 13, purl 2 together, purl 1, TURN Round 9: slip 1, knit 15. Gusset: Round 1: Pick up and knit 12 stitches on the side of the heel flap, knit the 24 stitches of the instep (top of the foot) in pattern (row 1 or 9 depending on where you stopped for the heel), pick up and knit 12 stitches on the other side of the heel flap, knit 16 (the heel). This is now the end of round. Round 2: Knit to instep (12 st), knit instep in pattern, knit 28 Round 3. Knit to last 4 st on needle (8 st) knit 2 together, knit 2, knit instep in pattern, knit 2, knit 2 together through back loop, knit till end of round. Round 4: Knit to instep (11 st), knit instep in pattern, knit 27 Round 5. Knit to last 4 st on needle (7 st) knit 2 together, knit 2, knit instep in pattern, knit 2, knit 2 together through back loop, knit till end of round. Round 6. Knit to instep (10 st), knit instep in pattern, knit 26 Continue like that until 24 stitches remain on needle / side 2 (48 st in all). Knit pattern on instep and stockinet on sole until you are 3 cm from the desired length. It is again preferable to stop on round 8 or 16, but not necessary). Round 1: Knit the whole round (48 st) Round 2. \*Knit 2 st, knit 2 through back loop, knit 16, knit 2 together, knit 2\* Repeat on needle/side 2 Round 3. Knit the whole round (44 st) Round 4: \*Knit 2 st, knit 2 through back loop, knit 14, knit 2 together, knit 2\* Repeat on needle/side 2 Continue until you have 10 stitches on each needle/side and then use Kitchener stitch to graft th toe together.
