Instar Hat
Amy Klimt Designs You know what can be found on bark and blossoms? Grubs! The "grubs" on this slightly slouchy hat are made by slipping stitches with yarn in front. This technique breaks up the color patterning in the yarn, making this pattern perfect for wildly colored handpainted sock yarn. Skill Level: Easy. Size: Adult M/L Finished measurements: $9.5^{\prime\prime}$ [23 cm] across, $8^{\prime\prime}$ $20\;\mathsf{c m}]$ tall.

Yarn: 240 yards [220 meters] hand dyed fingering weight yarn. Shown in Colinette Jitterbug ( $100\%$ superwash Merino wool) 318 yds [291 meters]/110g Color 87 Bright Charcoal Needles: Size US 3[3.25mm] 16"[40cm] circular needle and double-pointed needles, or size needed to get gauge. Size US 2[2.75mm] $\mathsf{16^{\prime\prime}}$ [40cm] circular needle, or one full size smaller than size needed to getgauge. Notions: 10 stitch markers, tapestry needle. Gauge: 34 sts and 44 rows per $4^{\prime\prime}\;[10\mathsf{c m}]$ in pattern stitch on larger needles.

Sample measures about $5.5^{\prime\prime}$ from cast-on edge to end of patterning. For more slouch or to accommodate more hair, you may want to work longer than specified.

Crown setup round: $\boldsymbol{*}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}6$ $\mathsf{p m}^{*}$ around. Make sure you can tell which one is the beginning of round marker. Begin crown decreases: Round 1: $*_{\mathsf{K}}$ to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm\* around. Round $2:\mathsf{K}$ all stitches, slipping markers as necessary. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 3 sts remain between markers, switching to double-pointed needles when necessary. Work round 1 once more. 20 sts remain. Next round: $*_{\mathsf{K}2\mathsf{t o g}_{i}}$ , remove marker\* around. 10 sts remain Break yarn and thread onto tapestry needle. Pass yarn through all live stitches twice, then
Finishing
Weave in ends. Shown worn with excess fabric in back folded over. You could tack the fold down with a stitch or two to keep it in position.
