Abba's Simple yet Versatile Sock Yarn Cowl Crochet Pattern for Customizable, Drapey, and Warm Accessories

Abba's Sock Yarn Cowl

Pattern illustration

A quick, very simple cowl, using a different colour sock yarn for each round. I started each round in a different place to avoid a 'thick' area and worked over the ends as I went, as there are a lot of ends! Gauge is not important, but it works best if it's not too loose so there are no obvious gaps between the stitches. Light but warm to wear, it creates a drapey fabric. I used 3mm hook with remnants of 4 ply sock wools, my finished cowl was 31cm (12in) wide at bottom (measured double, flattened as above), 29cm (11 1/2in) wide at top and 22cm (8 1/2in) deep. Obviously there's no limit to size, colours and type of yarn used. Let your imagination go.

Pattern:

(UK crochet terms used, for US terms, dc = sc) Started with a ring of 166 foundation dc's (Us fsc), sl st to close. Round 1: 2ch (counts as 1dc and 1ch), miss first dc, \* dc in next stitch, 1ch, miss next stitch \*; rpt \* to \*, ending with 1ch, sl st in first chain, pull yarn through last loop to finish off. Do not turn. Round 2: Start with new colour, 2 ch in any ch space (counts as 1dc and 1ch), then \* dc in next ch space, 1ch \*; rpt \* to \*, ending with sl st in first chain, pull yarn through last loop to finish off. Do not turn. Repeat these 2 rounds until your cowl in deep enough. If you want to make the cowl more shaped; after a couple of inches decrease a stitch or two on each side of cowl. Decrease by missing a chain (make dc in space then straight away another dc in next space), then on the next round, miss a dc (dc in space before the two dc's, 1ch, dc in space after two dc's). That's all there is to it. Happy hooking.
