Basic Hat Knitting Pattern for Aran-Weight Yarn 6-18 Months Not Knitted in the Round An Original Absolute Knits Design by Angela Juergens 2013
Hat Circumference not stretched: 14" Hat Circumference stretched: 16" Hat Height: 7"(hat height is measured from center of hat to ear lobe)
Materials: ARAN Weight Yarn with label saying 18 sts/4" 79 y (72 m) Yarn used here: Plymouth Yarn "Colorando" (87 yards /80 meters per 50 grams =1.76 ounces) 50% Cotton/50% Acrylic Straight or 24" circular kniting needle size Us 7 (4.5 mm) or size to achieve gauge, tapestry needle. Gauge: 18 sts/36 rows in Garter Stitch (= knit stitch only). Change needle size if necessary.
INSTRUCTION:
Cast on 66 sts leaving a longer tail which will be used to close side seam. Row 1: k2 \*p2, k2. Repeat from \* to end. Row 2: p2 \*k2, p2. Repeat from \* to end. Row 3: as row 1 Row 4:as row 2 Row 5:as row 1 Row 6: as row 2 Row 7: as row 1 Continue to work in knit stitch only until your hat measures 5" from cast on row. The decrease part = crown will add 2" to the hat height. TIP: You can add 1-2" to the hat and fold the brim over. It will fit a little longer but you will also need more yarn. To shape the crown of the hat work decreases as follows:
- Decrease round 1:
K1, \*k6, k2tog\* repeat from \*to\* ending with 1 stitch: knit this stitch = 58 sts

- Decrease round 2:
K1,\* k5, k2tog\* repeat from \*to\* = ending with 1 stitch: knit this stitch = 50 sts
Knit one round
- Decrease round 3:
K1,\* k4, k2tog\* repeat from \*to\* = ending with 1 stitch: knit this stitch = 42 sts Knit one round
- Decrease round 4:
K1,\* k3, k2tog\* repeat from \*to\* = ending with 1 stitch: knit this stitch =34 sts
Knit one round
- Decrease round 5:
K1,\* k2, k2tog\* repeat from \*to\* = ending with 1 stitch: knit this stitch = 26 sts
Knit one round
- Decrease round 6:
K1,\* kl, k2tog\* repeat from \*to\* = ending with 1 stitch: knit this stitch = 18 sts
Knit one round
- Decrease round 7:
K1,\* k2tog\* repeat from \*to\* = ending with 1 stitch: knit this stitch = 10 sts Cut yarn, thread tapestry needle with yarn end and pick up all 8 stitches in knitting direction. Go through all stitches a second time. Pull tight. Secure yarn.
Finishing:
Close back seam with Mattress stitch weave in ends.
