STITCH PATTERNS
Moss Stitch
Row 1: K1, [P1, K1] to end of row Repeat row 1 to create the pattern. 2x2 Checks (worked over 16 stitches) Rows 1 and 2: [K2, P2] 4 times Rows 3 and 4: [P2, K2] 4 times Repeat rows 1-4 to create the pattern. 4x4 Checks (worked over 16 stitches) Rows 1-4: [K4, P4] twice Rows 5-8: [P4, K4] twice Repeat rows 1-8 to create the pattern. 8x8 Checks (worked over 16 stitches) Rows 1-8: K8, P8 Rows 9-16: P8, K8 Repeat rows 1-16 to create the pattern
INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 49 stitches. Work 15 rows in moss stitch. Working in moss stitch as established, increase 3 stitches across next row as follows: Work 8 stitches in moss stitch as established, inc 1 in next stitch, work 15 stitches in moss stitch, inc 1 in next stitch, work 15 stitches in moss stitch, inc 1 in next stitch, work in moss stitch to end of row. There are now 52 stitches on your needle. Establish pattern as follows: K1, work Row 1 of 2x2 Checks over next 16 stitches, K1, work Row 1 of 4x4 Checks 0ver next 16 stitches, K1, work Row 1 of 8x8 Checks over next 16 stitches, K1. 2nd Row (wrong side): K1, work Row 2 of 8x8 Checks over next 16 stitches, K1, work Row 2 of 4x4 Checks over next 16 stitches, K1, work Row 2 of 2x2 Checks over next 16 stitches, K1. Continue patterns as established, keeping 1 knit stitch at each end of knitting as selvedge stitches, and 1 knit stitch between check patterns to separate the columns. Work until piece measures approximately 48 inches, or desired length, ending with a Row 8 or Row 16 of 8x8 Checks pattern. Work 3 decreases across next row as follows: Work 8 stitches in moss stitch; K2 tog; starting with a purl stitch, work 15 stitches in moss stitch; K2 tog; starting with a purl stitch, work 15 stitches in moss stitch; K2 tog; starting with a purl stitch, work in moss stitch to end of row. There are now 49 stitches on your needle. Work 15 rows in moss stitch. Cast off.
FINISHING
Weave in loose ends of yarn.
